Can an electric kettle purify water?

Introduction:

An electric kettle serves as a household appliance for boiling water. Nowadays, boiling water in a kettle is a common technique for purifying water. This blog explores the truth about how an electric kettle purifies water, its limitations, and different purification methods.

Can an electric kettle purify water?

An electric kettle purifies water by boiling; it kills most of the bacteria and parasites. It also reduces the concentration of some volatile compounds like chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide. On the other hand, boiling does not remove some toxic metals like lead and arsenic, nor does it remove physical impurities like grit, soil, etc.

An electric kettle generates heat to boil water, which helps in some ways to make the water safe, but it does not completely purify it. This blog provides details on this topic.

How does an electric kettle work?

If you look inside of an electric kettle, you will find a circular-shaped heating element, which is made from three components:

1.Nichrome-      It has a special quality called high electrical resistance, which generates efficient heat. It is also resistant to oxidation and corrosion.

2. Stainless steel: It is usually used for outer parts of the heating elements, providing durability and protecting the heating element from water.

3.Aluminum: It is typically coated on the base plate of the kettle to prevent corrosion when exposed to water. Sometimes Cooper is used in the place of aluminum.

Now, electricity enters this circular wire-shaped heating element when you plug your kettle in and turn it on. It transforms into a heated coil .The water in your kettle receives heat from this hot coil, which brings the water’s temperature up to the boiling point. To avoid overheating, the kettle’s thermostat detects when the water hits the boiling point and turns off immediately.

Why does boiling not remove chemical impurities from water?

Though boiling can kill microorganisms, it does not remove chemical impurities like heavy metals, chlorine, dissolved solid states, etc., from it. Now let’s discuss some chemical impurities that can not be removed by boiling.

 Non-volatile compounds:

Boiling water does not eliminate non-volatile substances such as minerals (quartz, calcite, etc.), heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), and some salts (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, etc.).

Reason: Now let’s know the exact reason why these elements are not removed by boiling.

Non-volatility: They do not evaporate at the boiling point of water since they are non-volatile by nature.

Stability: Because these elements are extremely stable compounds, their physical states do not change very often.

insufficient filtering: No filtration is used while boiling to get rid of these components. Reverse osmosis, distillation, and other methods are used to eliminate these components.

High melting and boiling points: These substances are made up of solid bonds. We needed a lot of energy and heat to break those bonds, leading to a high melting and boiling point.

Volatile compounds: Some volatile compounds that are not removed by boiling are organic compounds (benzene, toluene), chlorine, ammonia, certain pesticides, and herbicides.

Reason : Discuss the exact reasons

1.Stable structures: These substances often possess stable molecular structures that are difficult to break down when heated.

2. No absorption: Since boiling is a thermal process, it avoids processes that are necessary to eliminate volatile substances, such as membrane filtration and activated carbon adsorption.

3. No evaporation: The process of boiling water is not selective; it simply releases enough energy to cause any compounds with sufficient volatility to enter the vapor phase. Boiling fails to differentiate between water and volatile pollutants in the absence of a separation method such as distillation.

Why don’t electric kettles remove physical sediments?

Since electric kettles are made just to heat water and not to filter or separate pollutants, they are unable to remove physical sediments from water. This is the reason:

1.Absence of filtration mechanism:

In trying to actually trap or remove solid particles, electric kettles lack filtration systems such as filter screens, sediment filters, or adsorption materials. Instead, they are simple appliances that use heat transfer to boil water.

 2. Possible sediment concentration:

As steam goes away during boiling, the amount of water decreases, which concentrates any physical sediments, minerals, or impurities in the remaining water. Over time, this may even make the sediment deposit appear worse.

  3. No Physical Barrier:

Physical barriers like membranes, filters, or traps that could catch particles or suspended dust do not exist in electric kettles.

Is it safe to drink boiled water from a kettle?

For digestion: A little hot water, or boiled water, is also beneficial for your health. A glass of hot water in the morning helps to empty the stomach and enhance the digestive system.

For skin: Boiling water helps keep the skin and body fresh and beautiful and reduces weight by eliminating accumulated toxins.

For throat: A blocked throat can be instantly relieved with hot or warm water. As a result, boiled water can always be used when a cough or infection is causing soreness in the throat. Infections of the throat can be treated with hot water. Even in the absence of an infection, it maintains the throat free.

For overall health: Many doctors recommend boiling water. This is due to the fact that boiling water is beneficial to the body’s general health.

When using an electric kettle, is it safe to keep the water boiled overnight?

If an electric kettle is left on all night, then it can be life threatening. It can cause a short circuit, which can result in someone losing their life, and the kettle can also be completely damaged. So after all the work done overnight, make sure that the kettle is unplugged.

If an electric kettle is modern and built, it will shut itself off thermostatically after boiling for around twenty seconds and normally cannot be turned on again for about three minutes as it cools down and the thermostat is reset; it will also have to be turned on again.

Which water is best, boiled on a gas stove or in an electric kettle?

Usually electric kettles boil water faster than gas stoves. Before knowing the exact reason, firstly we have to understand a formula.

Greater insulation reduces heat loss over time, which speeds up boiling.

An electric kettle is an isolated appliance. It loses very little heat, and very little heat is flowed through the side of the kettle when compared to a stove element.

When you give 100 percent energy to an electric kettle, the kettle will waste less energy and will convert almost 90 percent of its energy into the water in the kettle, which will heat the water quickly. On the other hand, when you give 100 percent energy to a stove, it will waste almost 50 percent of its energy and will convert almost 50 percent of its energy into the water in the stove, which will heat the water very slowly.

Can an electric kettle purify water?

Should you rely on an electric kettle to purify water?

It is safe to drink boiling water from an electric kettle if it is free of harmful chemical, physical, and viral impurities.

However, if the water contains dangerous microorganisms that do not die or whose toxicity does not decrease, as well as dangerous chemicals or physical pollutants that cannot be removed by boiling, it should never be drunk after boiling. Excessive consumption of these waters can cause digestive problems, skin problems, and even death.
